Over the last ten years, we think Vauxhall have made some of the worst car keys on the market. Key blades that just drop out and get lost are a weekly problem for owners at our shop in Lincoln. However, at long last, there’s a new type of key that comes with the Vauxhall Astra K.

In general, it feels different, better quality. The hinge mechanism that’s been causing so much grief to Insignia, Astra J, Zafira and Corsa owners, has improved. It looks as if it’s stronger, and although too early to tell, here’s hoping this is a better key.

Changing the key battery on the Vauxhall Astra K is very simple, you’ll just need a screwdriver and a good high quality replacement battery. Don’t go cheap, because cheap key batteries are the biggest cause of problems we see.

At the end of the post is a YouTube video if you’d prefer to watch, instead of read.

How to change an Vauxhall Astra K key battery transcript.

So, this is a key from a Vauxhall Astra K. It has a blade that flicks out and it’s got two buttons. Today we’re going to show you how to change the key battery.

Now it’s pretty easy to change this key battery, firstly, turn the key over so you can’t see the buttons. You’ll see that there’s a little slot that takes a screwdriver.

Place it in carefully and then rest the screwdriver on the silver key loop.

Then you need to lever the plastic cover away from the rest of the key. It will feel very tight if it hasn’t been opened before. So lever it up, making sure not to slip with the screwdriver. Then there will be a gap that opens around the key.

Pull it apart and here’s your key battery.

Again it’s a CR2032 and please buy a high quality battery, unbranded batteries cause so many problems.

This is pretty well made, to be fair. These are new rivets,as we are pointing to with the screwdriver and  they’ve seemed to have gone over to making a better key. So we’ll see how that goes.
