How do I change the key battery in my Vauxhall Astra Key?

Vauxhall have made it very easy to change the key battery on the Vauxhall Astra H model. To be fair, this is one of the easiest batteries to change, so please be confident that you can do this.

Of all the battery changes we do, this is one where you can’t get it wrong or mess it up. Even if you put the key battery upside down, although the key buttons won’t work, the car will still start!

Step One in changing your Vauxhall Astra Key Battery

It’s really important to buy a good quality CR 2032 key battery. Many problems we see are caused by cheap batteries. It seems mad to us that that anyone would drive a £5,000 car Vauxhall Astra H, with a £130 key, but put an unbranded market stall battery inside it! So spend a few pounds and get a good one.

Step Two

Flip out the the key blade as you normally do.

Step Three

The battery compartment cover is a piece of plastic, designed to just pull off, so put you thumb on it and pull it, you can’t break anything!

Step Four

As we show in the video, the important thing is to remove the battery and then put the new one in the correct way up. There are only two ways. You must be able to read the writing on the battery once it is fitted in your Vauxhall Astra key.

Step Five

Refit the battery cover. If the remote is in good condition, then it should just work, there is no need to reprogramme it.

If the remote doesn’t work after you fit the battery, then it’s possible there’s something else wrong.

Other reasons your Vauxhall Astra remote isn’t working

There are two other reasons that your remote has stopped working.

1.Underneath the plastic button that you press is an electronic circuit board. On this board are small switches and it’s common for these to come loose and eventually fall off. If you press the button but can’t feel a ‘click’ then this may be the problem.

2. The car thinks the key is still in the ignition, to read all about it click here.

3. The key has split open at some point and the electronics have been damaged, or the battery terminals are missing.
