Ford Mondeo 1999-2006 Basic Information

First of all, the Mondeo uses two types of car key. The remote key with buttons is the usual key used on most Fords and therefore seen most often.

The second type of key is the non-remote type that has the transponder chip inside.

Spare Keys Ford Mondeo 1999-2006

Prices of spare Mondeo keys have risen lately. The remotes are being manufactured less than before, increasing the key price. Expect to pay around £130 for the remote key and around £55 for a key without buttons. The really good news is that these can be re-used from other cars! See our video on how to find the correct used remote for your car.

Ford remote car keys are the highest quality, so much better than any other make. Simple, with no moving parts, the buttons are easy to press but do not wear out. If every other manufacturer was like Ford, we wouldn’t have a job!

Most Auto Locksmiths or key cutting shops won’t need codes to cut or programme your Mondeo, making it nice and simple. Key cutting shos will normally just clone the key, which is cheaper. Any decent Auto Locksmith will do it as Ford does, by programming it to the ECU. This is a better job, but costs more.

Again, because this job is simple and most Auto Locksmiths will keep the parts in stock, you shouldn’t have to wait long to get new keys. Waiting more than one working day is a long time.

Lost Keys Ford Mondeo 1999-2006

Again, any decent Auto Locksmith will have a tool that goes into the door lock and gets the keycode. This is needed to cut a key when all are lost. The main dealer will not have this secial tool, and will either remove a lock and strip it down, or, have a local Auto Locksmith that helps them out to get the code!

The style of lock used on the Ford Mondeo 1999-2006 is very basic. Most Auto Locksmiths should be able to make keys with thier eyes closed. Therefore, most Auto Locksmiths will be able to do this job. This should bring the price down as everyone wants this easy job.

Also, they’re quick to programme when compared to other vehicles as no codes are needed. You should expect to pay somewhere between £160-£200 for two keys, one of which will have buttons. This should include the cost of someone coming out to you in a van, which will save you the cost of recovering the car to the dealer.

Watch Out For

There’s a common problem that the Ford Mondeo keys suffer from. A sharp edge develops inside the ignition lock and wears the key. When this happens, the pattern on the key gets worn away, and the key becomes difficult to turn in the ignition lock. Having a new key blade cut won’t fix this, because the lock just grabs hold of the nice new key blade and won’t let it go.

Stuck key in ignition

We hear about and see, new shiny keys,  cut and stuck in the ignition lock. To release them, the ignition lock needs replacing! So have a look at the keyblade.  You may need a new ignition in the future.

Saying all this, Ford have used good quality keys, that last a long time. Sometimes the key blades wear, but these can be replaced easily and cheaply. The locks are simple and are long lasting. Overall we’re impressed.
